What's a Research
Partner?
It is an exploration
or production company lacking brokerage analytical support, because there is
no financing agreement in place (Did you think brokers write buy recs on companies
just because unrealized value is present?).
It is an exploration
or production company that has nothing to hide from investors, and provides
us with the information to prove it.
It is a company
that agrees to our analytical independence - the investment conclusions are
what we make them, and are not parroted from corporate promo material.
It is a company
with managerial excellence and cultural knowledge. If the company has a project
in Latin America, then we will interview management in Spanish. If there is
a project in West Africa, then we'll interview them in French. If there is a
project in Russia, we'll contract a Russian-speaking Subscriber to do the interview
on our behalf. We can do this for just about any language in any country, and
it is great fun (for us, usually).
Hey! What good
is a value investment in Mexico if the company doesn't know that the phrase
"No hay problemas" ['there are no problems'] may mean exactly the
opposite? We have a great story on a company that was taken to the cleaners
by the locals for lacking the knowledge of how business was done, and was tricked
into overpaying more than US$1,000,000 for a property. This company is not,
and will NEVER be, a Research Partner.

Sometimes,
companies stop supplying the needed information, or something changes so that
coverage qualifications are no longer met. Fees are refunded pro-rata, and coverage
at the Subscriber level stops. At the Private Client level, coverage continues
for those Client shareholders on an individual basis.
